Xinjiang
China's westernmost region
Xinjiang is an autonomous region in northwestern China, officially the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.
Home to the Uyghur people and other Turkic Muslim minorities, it has been the site of extensive Chinese government surveillance and detention programs that human rights organizations have called genocide.
The region borders Central Asian countries and contains significant oil and gas reserves.
The situation in Xinjiang has drawn international condemnation.
