Tatars

Turkic ethnic group

Tatars are a Turkic-speaking people historically associated with Central Asia and the Mongol Empire.

Today most Tatars live in Russia, particularly in Tatarstan, as well as in Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Turkey.

The term once referred broadly to various nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppes: Tatar cavalry, the Tatar yoke.

Also spelled Tartars, influenced by Tartarus, the Greek underworld—a spelling that reflected European fears of Mongol invasion.
