Huns

Ancient nomadic raiders

The Huns were a nomadic warrior people from Central Asia who terrorized Europe in the fourth and fifth centuries under leaders like Attila.

Their reputation for ferocity made Hun a slur applied to Germans during the World Wars, suggesting barbarism and brutality: The propaganda depicted the enemy as bloodthirsty Huns. (Lowercase huns is a plural term of endearment.)
