Ionia

Ancient Turkish coast

Ionia is an ancient region on the western coast of Asia Minor (modern Turkey), colonized by Greeks around 1000 BCE.

The Ionian Greeks developed a distinctive culture that produced early philosophy, science, and literature—Thales, Heraclitus, and Homer are associated with the region.

Ionian gives us the Ionic order in architecture and the Ionic dialect of ancient Greek.
