Siren

Sailor-luring sea creature

In Greek mythology, the Sirens were creatures—usually depicted as part woman, part bird—whose irresistible singing lured sailors to crash their ships on rocky shores.

Odysseus famously had himself tied to the mast so he could hear their song without succumbing.

The Sirens represent temptation that leads to destruction: Like the Sirens of old, the scheme promised riches but delivered ruin. (Lowercase siren is the warning device or any dangerously alluring woman.)
