Dardanelles

Aegean-Marmara passage

The Dardanelles is the narrow strait in northwestern Turkey connecting the Aegean Sea to the Sea of Marmara, and ultimately to the Black Sea via the Bosporus.

Historically called the Hellespont, this strategic waterway has been contested for millennia—from the ancient Greeks to the disastrous Allied campaign at Gallipoli in World War I.

Control of the Dardanelles means control of access between the Mediterranean and Black Sea.
