Sebastopol

Black Sea fortress

Sebastopol is a variant spelling of Sevastopol, a port city on the Crimean Peninsula with a long history as a naval base.

The city has been contested territory—besieged during the Crimean War and World War II, and at the center of geopolitical conflict following Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea.

The spelling Sebastopol persists in some English contexts and place names, including a town in California.
