pontificate
Hold forth grandly
Pontificate means to speak in a pompous, dogmatic way, as if one's opinions were beyond question: He pontificated about wine while everyone else just wanted to drink.
The word evokes someone holding forth with unearned authority.
Originally it meant to perform the functions of a pope or bishop—the pontiff—but this sense is now rare outside Catholic contexts.
