pontoon bridges
Buoyant river spans
A pontoon bridge is a temporary bridge supported by floating pontoons—flat-bottomed boats or hollow cylinders—rather than fixed piers.
Military engineers have built them for centuries to move troops across rivers quickly: The army crossed the Rhine on a pontoon bridge.
They're also used for civilian purposes where permanent bridges are impractical.
