Gaia

Self-regulating planet theory

In Greek mythology, Gaia is the primordial goddess personifying Earth, mother of the Titans and grandmother of the Olympian gods.

The name gained scientific currency through the Gaia hypothesis, proposed by James Lovelock, which treats Earth's biosphere as a self-regulating organism.

Environmental and spiritual movements often invoke Gaia as a symbol of planetary consciousness: Gaia will restore balance. (Lowercase gaia is an uncommon variant spelling.)
