PIP

Workplace improvement document

Pip has several unrelated meanings.

A pip is a small seed inside fruit like apples or oranges.

In cards or dice, pips are the small symbols showing value—the dots on dice or the spades and hearts on playing cards.

A pip is also a short, high-pitched sound, especially in British radio time signals.

In British slang, to pip someone is to narrowly defeat them: She pipped him at the post.

In workplace jargon, PIP is a performance improvement plan—a formal warning that an employee's job is at risk.
