pipping
Cracking the shell
Pipping is the process of a bird or reptile breaking through its eggshell during hatching.
The chick uses a small tooth-like structure called an egg tooth to pip—create the first crack or hole.
We watched the duckling pipping for hours before it finally emerged.
In British slang, to pip someone is to narrowly defeat them: She pipped him at the post.
