pippin
Orchard variety, tart
A pippin is a variety of apple grown from seed rather than grafted, or more specifically, any of several crisp, tart apple cultivars: Cox's Orange Pippin, Newtown Pippin.
The word can also mean something or someone excellent of its kind, though this use is dated: She's a real pippin. (Capitalized Pippin is a given name.)
