Okinawa
Largest Ryukyu island
Okinawa is a Japanese prefecture comprising a chain of subtropical islands in the East China Sea, southwest of the main Japanese islands.
The largest island, also called Okinawa, was the site of a brutal World War II battle and remains home to major U.S. military bases—a source of ongoing local tension.
Okinawan culture, cuisine, and dialect are distinct from mainland Japan.
