Newfoundland

Large water-loving dog

Newfoundland is a large island off the eastern coast of Canada, forming part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

It was the first part of North America to be explored by Europeans, with Viking settlements predating Columbus by centuries.

The name also refers to a breed of massive, thick-coated working dogs originally bred there for water rescue and hauling fishing nets.

The Newfoundland swam out to retrieve the drowning swimmer.
