Mausoleum

Monumental burial chamber

A mausoleum is a large, stately tomb—typically an above-ground stone building housing the remains of the dead.

The word comes from the monumental tomb built for Mausolus, a fourth-century BC ruler, which became one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world.

Mausoleums are often found in cemeteries as family burial chambers: The family mausoleum held four generations of Vanderbilts.
