Colossus of Rhodes

Ancient harbor statue

The Colossus of Rhodes was a giant bronze statue of the sun god Helios that stood at the entrance to the harbor of Rhodes, a Greek island.

Built around 280 BCE and destroyed by earthquake some sixty years later, it was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The name now evokes anything of enormous scale or ambition: a colossus of industry, the colossus that was the Roman Empire.
