burial at sea
Nautical funeral rite
Burial at sea is the disposal of human remains in the ocean, either by committing the body to the water or scattering ashes.
The practice has long traditions in naval service, where sailors who died aboard ship were wrapped in sailcloth and slipped overboard.
Today it remains an option for veterans, maritime workers, and anyone who felt a connection to the sea: She requested burial at sea in her will.
