Statue of Zeus

Enthroned ivory deity

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia was a massive gold-and-ivory sculpture of the Greek god, seated on a throne in his temple at Olympia.

Created by the sculptor Phidias around 435 BCE, it stood roughly forty feet tall and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The statue was destroyed, likely in a fire, sometime in the fifth century CE.

No copies survive, and its appearance is known only from ancient descriptions and coins.
