Lighthouse of Alexandria
Ancient Egyptian landmark
The Lighthouse of Alexandria was an ancient tower built on the island of Pharos in Alexandria's harbor around 280 BCE, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
Standing perhaps 350 feet tall, it guided sailors with fire reflected by mirrors.
The structure survived nearly two millennia before earthquakes destroyed it.
Its Greek name Pharos became the word for lighthouse in several languages.
