Tolkien (1892–1973) was an English writer and Oxford philologist who created modern fantasy literature with *The Hobbit* and *The Lord of the Rings*.

His invented languages, mythologies, and Middle-earth setting established the template for the fantasy genre.

Tolkien is often invoked as shorthand for epic worldbuilding: It's very Tolkien—elves, quests, the whole thing.
