Philip Pullman

Philip Pullman is an English author best known for *His Dark Materials*, a fantasy trilogy featuring parallel universes, armored bears, and a critique of religious authoritarianism.

The series—*The Golden Compass*, *The Subtle Knife*, and *The Amber Spyglass*—became widely assigned in schools and widely banned by religious groups.

Pullman writes with deliberate moral seriousness, positioning his work against what he sees as the life-denying aspects of Christianity, particularly C.S.

Lewis's Narnia books.

He has continued the story in *The Book of Dust* trilogy.
