dwarves

Underground mining race

Dwarves is a plural of dwarf, used especially for the mythological beings—short, bearded, skilled in mining and metalwork—found in Norse legend and modern fantasy: The dwarves forged magical weapons in their mountain halls.

Tolkien popularized this spelling over the older dwarfs.

For people of short stature, dwarfs remains standard; dwarves may seem to equate real people with fantasy creatures.
