subcreation

Invented fictional world

Subcreation is the act of creating a fictional world or secondary reality within the framework of the primary world.

The term was coined by J.R.R.

Tolkien to describe the craft of fantasy worldbuilding, where an author constructs an internally consistent imaginary realm that readers can enter and believe in.

A successful subcreation achieves what Tolkien called "secondary belief"—not mere suspension of disbelief, but genuine imaginative engagement with the created world.

Middle-earth remains one of literature's greatest acts of subcreation.
