Mordor

Volcanic evil kingdom

Mordor is the dark realm of the evil lord Sauron in J.R.R.

Tolkien's *The Lord of the Rings*—a volcanic wasteland surrounded by mountains, where the One Ring was forged and must be destroyed.

The name has become shorthand for any place of oppression, evil, or bleak industrial ruin: Commuting through that part of town feels like walking into Mordor.
