kitchen sink realism
Working-class drama style
Kitchen sink realism is a British artistic movement from the 1950s and 60s depicting working-class domestic life with unflinching honesty—the cramped flats, dead-end jobs, and unglamorous relationships that earlier British drama avoided.
The name comes from paintings that included ordinary household fixtures like kitchen sinks.
The style extended to theater, film, and fiction: Look Back in Anger, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning.
Now used broadly for any gritty, domestic-focused storytelling: The show has a kitchen sink realism that makes suburban despair feel visceral.
