Illyria

Ancient Balkan region

Illyria was an ancient region along the eastern Adriatic coast, roughly corresponding to modern Albania and parts of the former Yugoslavia.

The name survives mainly through Shakespeare's *Twelfth Night*, where Illyria serves as a romantic, slightly exotic setting: What country, friends, is this? This is Illyria, lady.

The word now evokes a vaguely mythical coastal realm.
