fibulae

Lower leg bones

Fibulae is the plural of fibula, the slender outer bone of the lower leg running parallel to the larger tibia.

In anatomy, the fibula bears little weight but provides attachment points for muscles.

The term also applies to ancient clasps or brooches resembling a safety pin, used to fasten garments: Roman fibulae were often elaborately decorated.
