Hudson Bay

Manitoba's northern water

Hudson Bay is a large inland sea in northeastern Canada, connected to the Atlantic Ocean through Hudson Strait.

Named after English explorer Henry Hudson, who searched for a Northwest Passage and was set adrift there by mutinous crew members in 1611, it is one of the world's largest bodies of water enclosed by land.

The bay freezes over in winter and has historically been central to the Canadian fur trade.

The Churchill River empties into Hudson Bay.
