tidal flats
Exposed seabed areas
Tidal flats are low-lying coastal areas that are alternately flooded and exposed by the tides.
These expanses of mud, sand, or silt support rich ecosystems—worms, crabs, and shellfish that draw shorebirds by the thousands.
At low tide, the flats may stretch for miles; at high tide, they disappear beneath shallow water.
Also called mudflats when predominantly muddy.
