muskeg

Northern acidic wetland

Muskeg is a type of boggy terrain found in northern regions, especially Canada and Alaska—a waterlogged expanse of decomposing plant matter, sphagnum moss, and sedges over poorly drained soil.

The ground appears solid but often isn't, making muskeg treacherous for travel: The trail disappeared into muskeg.

The word comes from Cree.
