bayou

Southern marshy waterway

A bayou is a slow-moving body of water in a low-lying area, typically a marshy tributary, outlet, or backwater of a river or lake.

The term is associated especially with the wetlands of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast: We paddled through the cypress-lined bayou.

Bayou country evokes images of Spanish moss, alligators, and Cajun culture.
