Métis
Red River people
The Métis are an Indigenous people of Canada descended from First Nations peoples and European settlers, primarily French-Canadian fur traders, who developed a distinct culture, language (Michif), and national identity in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The Métis are one of three recognized Indigenous groups in Canada, alongside First Nations and Inuit.
Métis communities played a central role in the Red River Resistance of 1869. (Lowercase métis is a general term for mixed ancestry.)
