Gaddafi
Longtime Libyan ruler
Gaddafi was the Libyan military officer and dictator who ruled from 1969 until his overthrow and killing in 2011.
His name appears in many transliterations from Arabic—Qaddafi, Gadhafi, Kadafi—none definitive.
He cultivated an eccentric image: flowing robes, female bodyguards, a tent pitched at diplomatic meetings.
His rule combined socialist ideology with Islamic principles under what he called the "Third Universal Theory."
