protesters
Sign-waving dissenters
Protesters are people who publicly demonstrate opposition to something—a policy, action, or condition they consider unjust.
They gather at marches, rallies, and sit-ins, often carrying signs and chanting slogans: Protesters blocked the intersection for hours.
The term is neutral, though coverage often distinguishes between "protesters" (legitimate) and "rioters" (violent).
