Assad

Damascus ruling family

Assad is an Arabic surname meaning "lion," most associated with the Assad family that ruled Syria from 1970 to 2024.

Hafez al-Assad seized power in a coup and ruled until his death in 2000, when his son Bashar al-Assad succeeded him.

The name became synonymous with authoritarian rule and, during the Syrian civil war, with brutal repression of dissent: the Assad regime, anti-Assad rebels.
