Muammar Gaddafi

Muammar Gaddafi was the dictator of Libya from 1969 until his overthrow and death in 2011.

He seized power in a military coup at age 27 and ruled for over four decades, cultivating an eccentric image with elaborate robes, female bodyguards, and rambling speeches.

His name appears in dozens of English spellings due to varying transliterations from Arabic: Qaddafi, Gadhafi, Kadafi, and others.

The Gaddafi regime collapsed during the Arab Spring.
