Gamal Abdel Nasser
Gamal Abdel Nasser was an Egyptian military officer who became president of Egypt from 1956 until his death in 1970, and remains one of the most influential figures in modern Arab history.
He led the 1952 revolution that overthrew the monarchy, nationalized the Suez Canal in 1956, and championed pan-Arab nationalism—the idea that Arab peoples should unite across national boundaries.
His name is often invoked in discussions of Arab identity, anti-colonialism, and Middle Eastern politics.
Nasser's speeches drew massive crowds throughout the Arab world.
