Benghazi

Libya's second city

Benghazi is Libya's second-largest city, a Mediterranean port in the country's east.

In American political discourse, Benghazi refers specifically to the 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound there, which killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others.

The incident became a prolonged controversy over the Obama administration's response: The hearings on Benghazi dragged on for years.
