Berber

North African indigenous

Berber refers to the indigenous peoples of North Africa, particularly those in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, or to their family of languages.

The Berber languages, also called Amazigh, predate Arabic in the region: She learned Berber from her grandmother.

Many Berbers prefer the term Amazigh, meaning "free people." (Lowercase berber is a style of carpet.)
