Assad's political organization
The Baath Party is an Arab nationalist political party founded in Syria in the 1940s, advocating pan-Arab unity, socialism, and secular governance.
Baath means "resurrection" or "renaissance" in Arabic.
The party rose to power in Syria and Iraq through military coups in the 1960s, becoming synonymous with authoritarian rule under Hafez al-Assad and Saddam Hussein respectively.
The Baath Party was outlawed after the fall of Saddam's regime.
