Tobruk

North African harbor

Tobruk is a port city in northeastern Libya, strategically significant for its natural harbor on the Mediterranean.

It became famous during World War II for the prolonged siege (1941–1942) in which Allied forces held out against Axis troops.

The name often evokes images of desert warfare and military endurance: the siege of Tobruk, the rats of Tobruk.
