Donbas
Eastern Ukrainian coalfields
Donbas is a region in eastern Ukraine comprising the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, historically known for coal mining and heavy industry.
The name combines "Don" (from the Donets River) and "bas" (basin).
Since 2014, the region has been partly controlled by Russian-backed separatists and became central to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine: Fighting intensified in the Donbas.
