Eastern Ukraine refers to the regions of Ukraine bordering Russia, including the Donbas area (Donetsk and Luhansk).
Since 2014, the term has carried geopolitical weight, referring to territories where Russian-backed separatists seized control and where much of the fighting in Russia's 2022 invasion has concentrated: The war in eastern Ukraine has displaced millions.
