Maidan
Kyiv's central square
Maidan refers to Independence Square in Kyiv, Ukraine, the site of major political protests.
The 2004 Orange Revolution and the 2013-2014 Euromaidan uprising both centered there, making Maidan shorthand for Ukrainian popular resistance and democratic movements: The protests on the Maidan changed the country's direction. (Lowercase maidan is a South Asian term for an open public space.)
