black earth
Rich dark loam
Black earth is dark, fertile soil rich in organic matter—the kind prized for agriculture.
The term often refers specifically to chernozem, the exceptionally productive soil found across the Ukrainian and Russian steppes: The black earth region produces most of the country's grain.
More loosely, any humus-rich topsoil may be called black earth.
