coke

Processed coal residue

Coke is the solid carbon residue left after coal is heated to drive off gases and tar.

It burns hotter than coal and is essential in steelmaking for smelting iron ore in blast furnaces.

To coke coal is to convert it through this heating process.

Coke also serves as informal shorthand for cocaine: He was caught with coke in his pocket. (Capitalized Coke is the soft drink.)
