Cossack Hetmanate
Steppe warrior state
The Cossack Hetmanate was a Ukrainian state that existed from 1648 to 1764, established by Cossack military leaders following a successful uprising against Polish rule.
Governed by an elected hetman (military commander), it maintained varying degrees of autonomy under shifting allegiances to Poland, the Ottoman Empire, and Russia.
The Hetmanate developed distinctive administrative and military institutions before being gradually absorbed into the Russian Empire.
