Crimean War

Florence Nightingale's battlefield

The Crimean War was a mid-nineteenth-century conflict (1853–1856) fought mainly on the Crimean Peninsula, in which Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire opposed Russian expansion toward the Mediterranean.

It produced modern nursing reforms through Florence Nightingale's work and demonstrated the destructive potential of industrial-age warfare.

The Charge of the Light Brigade became the war's most famous episode.
