Sublime Porte

Turkish imperial court

The Sublime Porte was the Ottoman imperial government, particularly its central administration in Constantinople.

The name refers to the ceremonial gate of the grand vizier's headquarters, where official business was conducted.

Western diplomats and historians used the term much as they might say "the White House" or "Downing Street" for a government: The Sublime Porte issued a formal protest.
